Does this 'word' arouses your curiosity? Perhaps I can give you some ideas of what it is all about, in every possible aspect that i can think of.
Who is he/she?? He/ She is someone that deals with animals when they are sick or ill. Wow!! Does it sounds interesting to you? Someone that deals with animals that do not have the ability to communicate (in human languages, of course). Have you ever wonder that he/she may has some 'magical' power that enables them to 'talk' to animals in some other ways?
What are the challenges face by a Veterinarian?? well, first of all, animals do not talk, in languages that human can understand. Thus, in order to help the animals, they are depend on their observations and owner's information (their observation towards their beloved animals in every aspect).Human Doctor learns only 'Homo sapiens' (Human) but they learn all domesticated animals (Eg, dog, cat, cattle, goat, sheep, horse, chicken, swine)!!
How long does this course will take ? 5 years, just like human doctor. Perhaps it sounds 'too long' for you. When you come to know its curriculum, you may think it is just nice to be in 5 years course.
What is all about this course?? As any other courses, you will be introduced basic courses such as anatomy, physiology, histology, embryology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, parasitology and etc. Follow by medicine and surgery courses as you are in more senior years. Throughout this 5 years of study, you will have chances to go for practicals in any farms within Malaysia or overseas. This makes your life becomes wonderful as you have the chance of getting in touch or care with any species of animals. You wouldn't be able to do so if you are a visitor in Zoo or parks!! With all this practicals, you are free from any housemanship in government sectors after you graduate!! Opsss, not to forget that animal production, its nutrition, feeds and feeding, genetics and management are also part of the curriculum as well. (You may think 5 years are too short to cover all this now!!)
Where can I study this course?? As far as I know, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University Putra Malaysia (UPM) is the only univesity in Malaysia that provides this course. You may like to visit http://www.vet.upm.edu.my/ for more information about this course if you are interested or you may know your relatives, your friends that are interested in it.
Job opportunities??? While the majority of veterinary technicians are employed in private practice, the demand for technicians is rapidly expanding to include new employment opportunities in both human and animal health-related fields such as: Biomedical research, Colleges/Universities, Zoos and wildlife facilities, Food safety inspection, Diagnostic laboratories, Veterinary supply sales, Humane societies and animal control facilities, Drug and feed manufacturing companies, veterinary clinics and etc.
Well, that's all I can think of for the moment. Do leave me messages or comments if you have any. Then, we can share, discuss (or whatever words you like to use) about it together! Cheers ~~~~
